After the introductory cutscene, regaining control feels like being thrown into a sniper's nest. The initial ambush by unseen archers sets the tone. Interaction with a fearful voice in a small house reveals a quest to find the missing Third Prince. Pushing forward leads to a gate guarded by another Rat Governor and Archer. Defeating them opens the village field. Here, a powerful optional boss, the Earth Wolf, awaits. This agile beast uses leaping attacks and quick combos. Defeating it grants the Earth Wolf (Spirit), which unlocks the Wild Rapture transformation—a charging attack that inflicts stagger. A nearby altar holds a statue that was the source of the pleas for help. By a large tree, players can also collect Licorice and a Goat Skull soak, which increases max HP temporarily.
Opening the village's front gate from the inside creates a shortcut and triggers a final confrontation. Returning to the large wooden door in the plaza starts a cutscene and a boss fight against The King of Flowing Sands and the Second Prince of Flowing Sands. This duo fight has a critical mechanic: always defeat the Prince first. If the King dies first, the Prince enters a dangerous enraged state. This area is where the fleeing King of Flowing Sands meets his gruesome end, devoured by his awakened eldest son, the First Prince of Flowing Sands. This monstrous rat is a formidable field boss. Exploring the cave before engaging him yields the Awaken Wine Worm and Fire Bellflowers. His powerful attacks can sometimes break open a secret wall; if not, using the Wandering Wight's Faithful Kowtow move works. Inside lies the Loong Scales, a key item for secret boss battles.
Defeating the First Prince yields the Arhat Gold Piece, a quest item. Deeper in the caves, past Swift Bat enemies, a barricaded door hides an altar with the Celestial Nonary Pill, which permanently increases Stamina. The cave finally exits at the entrance to the Crouching Tiger Temple.
Sandgate Village also holds one of the game's most intriguing secrets: the Mad Tiger boss. This quest begins elsewhere but culminates here. Using the Old Rattle-Drum item in three specific locations, including one in the Valley of Despair near the Earth Wolf's pond, opens a well. Following a young boy down leads to a hidden arena where the Mad Tiger lurks. Victory grants the Mad Tiger (Spirit) and, from a chest, the Plaguebane Gourd.
